Our trails span across three state forests and the Superior National Forest with scenic wilderness routes where you'll find yourself surrounded by towering pines.
Without the Ely Igloos, the trails we ride around Ely would likely not be open or in the condition they are today. Our club works with the US Forest Service, Minnesota DNR, St. Louis County, cities and townships and private property owners to provide for the trail network snowmobilers can sometimes take for granted. We are responsible for the 90-mile Tomahawk Trail from Ely to the North Shore and have agreements in place to groom the portages that make lake riding so much fun! We build the bridges, clear the downed trees and put up the signage that makes snowmobile riding in Ely fun!
Trails officially open December 1st! Remember, a Minnesota State Snowmobile Trail Sticker is required for ALL snowmobiles operating on state or grant-in-aid trails. Snowmobile Trail Stickers can be purchased at several locations in Ely, online, by phone at (888) 665-4236 or by mail: MN DNR License Center 500 Lafayette Road St. Paul, MN 55155-4026.

The new reroute of the Tomahawk Trail was completed on Wednesday, November 30th. This new trail will be on high ground and can be used year round by snowmobiles and ATV's. This will help tremendously in grooming costs and will be a better trail. The 8 mile trail will avoid swamps and rough terrain which have been very difficult to groom in the past. This trail goes from Nickle Lake (end of Spruce Road) to August Lake and brings you to the Mattila Shelter. Many thanks go out to US Forest Service, MN DNR, Sno-Barons and many volunteers of the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club. |

Our groomer operators work very hard to improve the ridability of the trails in and around Ely. We have three Bombardier tractors, two snowmobiles and five drags for taking out the moguls and bumps on the trails. We groom the Tomahawk Trail and others. And when traffic gets to be too much on the Taconite Trail between Ely and Tower, the DNR contracts with us to groom that as well! |
